Portuguese cannon recovered from Davy Jones locker

A cannon believed to be used during the Portuguese period was recovered from the deep sea 13 miles off the Sinnapadu coast. Following information provided by fishermen in the afternoon of Tuesday (06), Mundalama police, with the help of divers, brought the cannon to the surface yesterday, and brought it ashore by boat and from there to Mundalama police station by a lorry. The cannon gun is 7’8” long and weighs 1000 kilograms. The circumference of the mouth is 12 inches. There are some letters carved but cannot be identified as it is covered with moss. This cannon gun is similar to those exhibited at Galle Face Green. (082, 093, 100)
